“If you love beauty, it’s because beauty lives within you. If you love art, it’s because you are creative. If it wakes up your heart, a receptor for it already exists within you. Your soul is drawn to the things that will help you unfold your most glorious expression. Give in.” — Cynthia Occelli

Photo: Nelson Mouëllic Steph Varasteh, fine art film photographer in Vancouver BC, black and white portrait seated with vintage twin-lens reflex camera on a sunlit rooftop

Hello! I’m Steph.

Here’s the truest thing I can tell you about myself: seeing and feeling, for me, have always been the same thing. I’m an artist first, and everything else I do comes out of that. I paint in watercolour and oil. I make photographs, mostly on film. They’re all just different ways of asking the same question — what does it feel like to be alive in this particular moment, in this particular light?

I learn most of what I know from the natural world. The slow patience of lichen on rock. The pull of a river. Sandstone worn smooth by time. The first tentative buds of spring. I listen. I look. I respond to what’s stirred in me, and make something from what I’ve found.

My photography started years ago in the company of other artists and dancers — people drawn together by shared instincts, doing the work for the love of it. Still life drawing taught me how to look slowly, and when I turned my lens toward people, I tried to see them the way a painter would: as landscape, as architecture, as feeling made visible. The work of Egon Schiele, Francesca Woodman, Vivian Maier, Lee Miller, Hilma af Klint, and Pina Bausch — I keep returning to them, the way you return to certain books.

These days, I photograph families, mothers, ceremonies — the small weddings and quiet elopements, the rituals that deserve to be held. When I’m not behind the camera, I’m teaching Pilates at Union Pilates, cold plunging (or swimming) in the ocean, and savouring the small things in life whenever I can.

Time moves faster than we expect. A decade passes and we swear it was only a year. The light on a particular afternoon. The raw, unguarded, beautifully imperfect chaos of a life being lived. I want to be there for it — and with a little grace and one click of the shutter, hold some of it still for you. Something to pass down. Something to return to. Proof that you were here, that it was real, that it was worth remembering.

If any of this resonates, I’d love to hear from you.

From first hello
to final gallery

Every step is intentional. From our first conversation to your final prints, everything is designed to honour both the craft and the significance of your story. This isn’t rushed work — it’s deliberate, considered, and made to last.

Step
01

It starts with a conversation

You reach out because something about this work speaks to you — maybe the warmth of film, maybe the promise of something more intentional than a standard portrait session. Whatever brought you here, I’m glad you’re considering working together.

Step
02

20 minutes to connect

We’ll hop on a call to talk about your vision. Are you documenting a growing family? Celebrating a milestone? I want to understand not just what we’re photographing, but why these images matter to you. We’ll talk about my approach, how I work, and whether we’re a good fit.

Step
03

Setting things up

About 3 weeks before your shoot, we’ll have a video call to discuss styling, wardrobe, and preparation. If we’re shooting at home, I’ll encourage you to do only a light tidy — the goal is your space feeling like you, not a magazine spread.

Step
04

The best part

Sessions run 90 minutes to 2 hours, depending on what we’re documenting. I work primarily with medium format film cameras, shooting mostly in black and white with occasional color.

We might work in your home, step outside into natural light, or visit a place that means something to your family. The key is finding spaces where you feel comfortable being yourselves.

Step
05

Patience is part of the process

After our session, I drop the film at my trusted lab for development. Then comes the careful work of scanning, editing, and curating your final gallery. This takes 3–4 weeks — I know waiting is hard, but the result is worth it.

Step
06

The final piece

Your finished images — 40–50+ high resolution files — arrive in a private online gallery you can share with family and use to order additional prints. You’ll also receive two 5×7 fine art prints on museum-quality Baryta paper — something tangible to hold in your hands.

How far in advance should we book?

4–6 weeks ahead is the sweet spot, especially through the busier months from May to September. But meaningful moments rarely arrive on a tidy schedule, so if you’re working with a tighter window, please reach out! I’ll always try to make room with my existing schedule between teaching Pilates full-time and shoots.

What makes you different from other photographers?

My approach goes against the grain of the traditional posed portrait. What I’m really after are the in-between moments — the ones that are beautiful, raw, honest, and often a little messy. Those small, almost-unnoticed moments are where the real magic tends to live.

Because I shoot mostly on film, our time together doesn’t feel like a session. Life keeps moving — bathtime, playtime, naptime, breakfast on the counter — and I’m there with my camera in “behind the scenes” mode, quietly watching, feeling, trusting my intuition for when to release the shutter. The best frames usually come in the small window when you notice the camera is there, and then forget about it again.

I’ll step in and gently direct when I see something I want to explore further. With little ones around, the session becomes extended playtime — a picnic in the garden, dress-up, painting, drawing, baking. Sessions are guided by creativity and imagination, and the camera quietly finds its way to the rest.

What’s included in every session?

Every session includes the following:

  • Discovery call
  • A follow-up meeting to discuss styling and pre-shoot details
  • Ongoing dialogue via email/text for any questions that might come up
  • Film + professional film development at a trusted lab
  • 40–50+ high resolution digital images delivered via private online gallery
  • Two 5×7 fine art prints on museum quality fine art paper
  • All local travel
Do you offer any add-ons?

Yes, a few optional extras: rush delivery within one week (+$200), additional black & white film rolls ($100 each), additional colour film rolls ($125 each), Polaroid & lift bundle ($100), and fine art prints on request.

Why film photography, and what about digital?

Film asks me to slow down — to be intentional with every frame. Each one costs something (the roll, the time, the attention), so you can’t just shoot through a moment and hope. You have to be there, watching, choosing, trusting that the right frame is the one in front of you.

That patience shows up in the photographs. There’s a warmth, a grain, a softness to the light that digital still hasn’t quite matched. The images feel less like quick captures and more like objects worth keeping — heirlooms, not snapshots.

Film is my primary medium, but I’ll reach for digital when the story asks for it — low light, fast-moving children, a moment I can’t risk losing. The medium follows the moment, not the other way around.

What if the weather doesn’t cooperate?

Some of my favorite images come from unexpected weather. Light rain, overcast skies, even snow can add atmosphere. We’ll make the call together based on safety and your comfort.

How should we prepare for our session?

We’ll have a detailed consultation 3 weeks before to discuss styling and preparation. The short version: wear clothes that feel like you, do only a light tidy if we’re at home, and focus on being present rather than perfect.

What if my children won’t cooperate?

Those are often the moments I’m quietly hoping for. There’s no asking them to pose or perform, but to simply feel free enough to be themselves: playful, restless, tired, silly, whatever the day brings. Sessions with little ones often feel less like a photoshoot and more like an afternoon at home: snacks on the counter, dress-up clothes scattered, someone wanting to be held, someone refusing to be. The “cooperation” I’m after is just letting the day happen, with me quietly there.

The frames where they’re refusing to look at the camera, or running off mid-laugh, or melting down a little — those are often the ones you’ll come back to in five years, in ten. The ones that hold who they were, in that small slip of time.

Can we see some images before the full gallery is ready?

I don’t typically share previews, but I can make exceptions for special circumstances. There’s an additional fee for early peeks, as it interrupts my normal editing workflow.

How long do you keep our images?

Your digital gallery stays active for one year after delivery. I maintain backups for several years beyond that, but I highly recommend downloading your images and backing them up yourself!

Do you offer payment plans?

I don’t have set payment plans, but I do understand this is a meaningful investment for your family. If a different timing or arrangement would help, please mention it when you reach out — I’m always open to talking through what might work.

For payment itself, I prefer cash or e-transfer. If credit card is easier on your end, that can be arranged too.

What if we want more prints?

Yes, absolutely. You can order additional prints at any time from your private online gallery. Each one is made in-house on a Canon Pro-100 using museum-grade fine art Baryta paper — archival quality at prices comparable to most commercial labs, including Costco.

Still have questions? I’m always happy to chat.

I’d love to hear your story

Every session starts with a conversation. Send me a message to share what’s pulling you toward this moment — a pregnancy you’re celebrating, a chapter of family life you don’t want to forget, a portrait session, an artist collaboration, or something special on the horizon. Once I have a sense of what you’re hoping for and it feels like we might be a good fit, we’ll hop on a 20-minute discovery call to talk through the details, my process, and any questions on your mind — and to see if it feels right on both sides.
